Based on the experience of the candidate, the selected candidate shall earn between $14-
$17/Hr. Raises and bonuses may be available for high-performing candidates.
Duration
This position lasts four months, yet may be available for renewal in the Winter at the discretion of the Company. This position will require approximately 15-20 hours per week of work, depending on Associate availability, and can be flexible with your academic schedule.
Eligibility
Positions are open to 2nd year and 3rd-year law students. First-year students in their second semester will be considered only if they demonstrate outstanding academic research and writing capabilities.
GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Associates will research and organize information that varies in difficulty from an introductory to medium level. Complex projects will be available throughout the associate term.
DISTINGUISHING FACTORS
The seasonal associate position is designed for students to be exposed the main practice areas of the firm, yet please know there may be some overlap in the different areas. However, the general allocation is as follows:
- Intellectual property law (Copyright & Trademark)
- International business law
- U.S. business law (agreement drafting and preparation.)
- Non-profit law and legal writing.
Areas of Law
Our practice areas include international corporate law, healthcare law, mergers and acquisitions,
U.S. business entity selection and counseling, U.S. copyright and trademark, foreign direct investment, nonprofit law, and some occasional work in corporate litigation and securities.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE POSITION
- Research legal issues for client matters and prepare memoranda that follow the standard firm legal memoformat.
- Compile and organize information obtained from research on particular issues in a memo, graph, orchart.
- Attend client meetings and (or) trainings in specific practice areas.
- Recommend additional resources to the firm library.
- Communicate regularly with supervising attorney on progress on projects.
- Assist with collaborations with co-counsel.
- Ask any questions that may deepen the understanding of the associate.
To perform this job successfully, an individual must perform each of the above essential functions satisfactorily.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
The supervising attorney will closely review all work prepared by Associate. On occasion, Associate may be called upon to provide an explanation of his or her work or make suggestions based on research he or she completed.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Applicant must have graduated from an accredited four-year institution, be currently enrolled in an accredited law school, and be enrolled in coursework that directly reflects an interest in one or more of the central practice areas of the law firm.
Training: Applicant should have plans to be admitted to the bar of one or more U.S. states upon the completion of his or her legal studies. Although preference will be given to applicants who will sit for the Ohio, Florida, New York, or Washington D.C bar, all applicants are welcome.
Experience: Any prior experience in one of the central practice areas of the firm (intellectual property, international business, U.S. corporate law, and non-profit law) is strongly considered. Applicant should demonstrate involvement in one or more programs or extracurricular activities in addition to his or her legal studies. Although applicants participating in moot court and journal are strongly encouraged to apply, all applicants are welcome.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Location: This position is available as a remote position for applicants based in Miami, Cleveland, Columbus, New York, or outside of Gainesville, Florida. Those based in Gainesville, Florida will be on-site to complete their work, not remote. As an on-site position, we are based in our Gainesville, Florida office at UF Innovate. Remote applicants, based outside of Gainesville, will check-in weekly via zoom and will meet with the managing Attorney at a designated time in person and have regular phone calls for our Miami and Cleveland offices. The supervising attorney will check-in regularly with Associate on all projects for the day.
