7 Top Management Skills to Run a Successful Non-Profit

These skills are unique to non-profit organizations and are needed to operate as efficiently as possible. The following seven skills are extremely important.

  1. Fundraising and Grant Writing – An essential skill that is vital to non-profit organizations is the ability to raise funds and apply for grants. Without income, the non-profit will be unable to flourish and meet the financial obligations that they have. Fundraising and applying for grants is an extremely time consuming process. Good executive directors will have to be able to balance their time and energy so as to not ignore their other obligations.
  2. Governance (Boards of Directors)- Non-profit organizations often have a Board of Directors that is made up of a varied group of individuals. It is not uncommon for the board of directors to be made up of volunteers. A qualified executive director must be able to interact with this diverse group of people.
  3. Nonprofit Budgeting and Accounting- The major purpose of non-profit organizations is to serve the public. As a result, there are several forms the federal government requires non-profits to fill- out. The executive director for a non-profit must be able to fill out all of the required forms, for accounting and budgeting to track the spending. Even if the director does not do this personally, he or she should have a trusted individual who does so for the organization. Maintaining regular registration is important so that the organization does not jeopardize its non-profit status.
  4. Nonprofit Program Development and Evaluation- The purpose of a non-profit organization is to deliver a specific service to the public. The executive director is responsible for organizing the programs that deliver these services to the public which are stated in the mission statement of the organization.
  5. Public Policy- Federal laws and regulations have a major impact on non-profit organizations. Thus, it is essential for the executive director to be involved at all levels, from the city government to the national government. This will ensure that they are aware of the ever changing federal policies that are imperative to the success of the organization.
  6. Volunteer Programs- Non-profit organizations rely heavily on volunteers. It is the executive director’s job to manage the volunteers in the same way as he manages the staff that is on the payroll. Executive directors need the ability to recruit valuable and skilled people.
  7. Evaluating Performance – Executive directors are responsible for managing the volunteer’s performance which includes setting forth guidelines for the work that they will be preforming and for evaluating their performance. Additionally, directors should set goals and initiate rewards for reaching the goals. They may also have to terminate the volunteer’s services if they are not performing at a level that is necessary.
